IPL 2020: Former India fast bowler Ashish Nehra believes players heading to Indian Premier League IPL 2020 after featuring in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) will have an edge over the others.
The novel coronavirus pandemic has had a big impact on the global sporting calendar with cricket having been no exception. Top-level T20 cricket will return for the first time when CPL 2020 kickstars in Trinidad and Tobago in bio-secure environments from August 18 to September 10.
Kieron Pollard, Dwayne Bravo, Andre Russeell, Imran Tahir, Mitchell Santner, Rashid Khan, Mujeeb ur Rahman are among the IPL stars who will be in action in the CPL. The T20 action will continue in the IPL which will be played in the UAE across Dubai, Sharjah and Abu Dhabi from September 19 to November 10.
While international cricket resumed last month in England and teams began training elsewhere across the globe, only a few India players got back to the nets after the lockdown due to the pandemic. They are likely to begin full-fledged training with their respective IPL franchises from this week.
“I would like to say, whichever player plays CPL, there is no guarantee that their performance will be replicated in the IPL, but they will definitely have an edge over the other players,” Nehra said on Star Sports show Cricket Connected.
“If you reach UAE after playing for a month, it will definitely make a difference, be it Kieron Pollard or Imran Tahir or Rashid Khan.”
Nehra had a special word of praise for Chennai Super Kings and South Africa leg-spinner Imran Tahir, who will be heading to the UAE after featuring in the CPL.
“Even today when Imran Tahir takes a wicket, he celebrates like an 18-20 year old player. He is a dedicated player,” Nehra said.
“When we talk about a certain age, when you get to play more matches and get more practice at that age, it is always better. It will be a really good thing for Imran Tahir to play the IPL after playing in the CPL.
