IPL 2020: Ruturaj Gaikwad shows spark as CSK live to fight another day with 8-wicket win over RCB

Chennai Super Kings’ losing streak finally came to an end on Sunday as they registered a 8-wicket win over Royal Challengers Bangalore in Match 44 of the Indian Premier League 2020 in Dubai.

Chasing a below-par 146 for victory, CSK got off to a positive start with Ruturaj Gaikwad and Faf du Plessis adding 46 before Chris Morris brought an end to his South African teammate’s cameo worth 25 off 13 balls.

Gaikwad showed his potential with the bat for the first time this season as he joined forces with Ambati Rayudu to take the team closer to the target. Gaikwad ended up with 65 off 51 balls with 4 fours and 3 sixes while Rayudu scored 39, with the duo adding 67 runs for the second wicket.

Chahal ended the partnership with Rayudu’s wicket but it came too late as Gaikwad and MS Dhoni took the team over the line in the 19th over. (RCB vs CSK Match 44 IPL 2020: Highlights)

The win keeps CSK’s chances alive in the competition even though they are last on the table with 8 points from 12 matches. They still have an outside chance of qualifying for the playoffs if they win their remaining 2 games and then hope for some of the other match results to go their way.

RCB meanwhile, remain in third place with 14 points from 11 games.

Earlier, CSK bowlers stepped up to the occasion by restricting RCB to 145 for 6 in 20 overs after Virat Kohli won the toss and elected to bat first.

Openers Aaron Finch and Devdutt Padikkal found it hard to get the team off to a flying start thanks to some tight bowling by Sam Curran, Deepak Chahar and Mitch Santner, among others.

Finch was dismissed for 22 by Curran while Santner sent back Padikkal for 22.

Skipper Virat Kohli then teamed up with AB de Villiers to steady the ship with a partnership worth 82 runs for the third wicket. Kohli scored 50 off 43 while de Villiers made 39 but the script went horribly wrong after Curran broke through with Kohli’s wicket.

The batsmen who followed couldn’t even score more than 5 runs from there on which ultimately resulted in RCB ending up with a modest total.

Curran was once again the star of the show for CSK with 3 wickets for 19 runs from 3 overs while Chahar took 2 for 31 from his 4 overs. Santner got a wicket as well for his hard work.
