World Cup-winning India spinner Harbhajan Singh believes Sanju Samson has the potential to be the future of Indian cricket if he learns from his mistakes and seals the opportunities in the Indian jersey.
Sanju Samson’s initial IPL brilliance earned a place in India’s T20 squad for the Australia tour despite an eventually underwhelming season for Rajasthan Royals. It was considered a monumental opportunity that Samson had to grab with both hands to salvage his international future.
However, Samson has failed to grab the opportunities given by the Indian team management in the three-match T20I series on the Australian tour. The 26-year-old wicket-keeper batsman managed to scored only 48 runs in three matches.
“Sanju has got the opportunity to bat at No.4. He is still on his first or second tour, he will learn. We know that he has got the potential and India won the series,” Harbhajan Singh told India Today.
“These guys will be the future of Indian cricket. You know if they will not mistakes, they will not learn. I am sure Sanju Samson with the quality he has, is gonna learn and get better from here.
“If he will not learn obviously someone else will come and take that slot. Because no.4 is a very important slot. If you have got the opportunity, you have to seal it. If not on this tour but next tour, you have to come better prepared and make sure you make it count,” Harbhajan added.
Interestingly or rather amusingly, Samson has played just 7 T20Is despite making his debut in 2015 — 5 years and just 7 matches. And for all his talent and potential, it will be interesting to see if India’s selectors will remain patient with him in a T20 World Cup year.
